Mosaics From Plates: Design, Style, and Pattern with Angele Hanansen

Description:
It is not just about smashing plates! In this informative workshop you will learn about the masterful ways of transforming ceramic plates into artfully designed mosaics. We will discuss technical secrets of breaking the plates in a controlled way, methods of designing mosaics based on image patterns, and how to skillfully plan out and finish the mosaic. All levels welcome.

Introduction to Stone Mosaics with Yakov Hanansen
September 12-13, 2020, Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Description:
Every stone has a story. Learn how to work with different types of stones to create your next mosaic.  Students will practice precision stone cutting on a hardie, tumbling, and assembling a mosaic in reverse, then attaching it to a permanent substrate. Indoor and outdoor  installations will be discussed. All levels welcome.

Realistic Mosaic Portraiture with Yulia Hanansen
October 10-11, 2020, Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days, at Unicorn Art Studio.

Description:

This workshop is focused on learning how to create a portrait in a mosaic medium. Working from a photograph or a master painting you will learn how to transform a portrait into a mosaic. Double reverse technique will be shown as an alternative method for portraiture making. Portraiture andamento (layout flow), face structure, shading, flesh tone, color choices, and precision cutting, will be extensively discussed during this class. We will pay special attention to the details such as eyes, expression, nose, lips, ears, hair. You will have a choice of working with either stained glass tiles or many colors of smalti. Choose your own portrait with the approval of instructor or work with the image provided by the instructor. Make a copy from a master painter (highly recommended for beginners), or follow a photograph. Board size: 10"x12" or similar. Students are welcome to bring larger images and work on a 10x12” section. All levels are welcome. Absolute beginners are required to take 4 class sessions at Unicorn Art Studio prior to attending this workshop to learn the basic mosaic skills.

Andamento and Abstraction: Making it Work with Angele Hanansen

Description:
Students will study the importance of line, directional flow, and color in creating abstract mosaics. The beginning of the workshop will be dedicated to learning design aspects of the abstract mosaic, learning the tricks of successful andamento, and coming up with the color scheme. Second part of the workshop will feature a  hands-on practice of enlarging a section of the mosaic “to-scale” and drawing out an andamento. Backsplash design and installation will be discussed.

Flower Mosaics with Yulia Hanansen
November 14- 15, 2020, Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days, at Unicorn Art Studio.

Description:

Learn how to translate flowers from photographs or works of art into mosaics. In this 2-day workshop we will explore the following: flower structure, closeups, depth of field, choosing a color palette, effectively portraying flower details, composition, and layout. Technical aspects of working with the stained glass will be thoroughly discussed including a "tool talk", how to skillfully cut glass, what adhesives to use, and materials safety. For this workshop we will be using Yulia’s boat-shaped “brush-stroke” tesserae that you will learn how to cut during the workshop. The board size of 10”x12” will allow you to work on a detail from a larger image or on the whole flower. Two layout technique options will be studied during this class: direct layout and double-reverse layout. You will be able to choose one of those options for your project. The goal of this workshop is to explore the ways of portraying flowers based on photos and paintings and gaining a hands-on experience in working with glass. Images will be provided by the instructor. All skill levels are welcome.

Shading and Color in Mosaic Medium with Angele Hanansen
December 5, 2020, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Description:
In this workshop students will study how to better understand the relationship between colors and tone and how to apply this knowledge to their mosaic. We will complete a drawing from observation or a photograph, learn how to pick out the right color palette for a mosaic, and study the importance of a tonal gradient when choosing tesserae. Students can bring an image or an object to work from. All levels welcome.

Composition Theory and Practice with Angele Hanansen

Fear no more! In this intensive workshop learn how to create compositions that are engaging, striking, and unique. The hands-on practice will include study of line, shapes, form, tonal and color characteristics, and the study of balance, resonance, and rhythm between the shapes. Stepping Stone Mosaics For Outdoor Use with Yakov Hanansen

In this intensive workshop students will learn how to cast mosaics into concrete. Students will practice working with different materials suitable for the outdoors including cutting stone on a hardie, tumbling, assembling mosaic, and casting.  All levels welcome.
